This networking and career advising session offers early career researchers (ECRs) exceptional access to distinguished SOTM speakers and organizers in an intimate, conversational setting. The event provides invaluable mentorship opportunities where ECRs can connect with senior colleagues they might not otherwise meet, while also fostering peer networking with fellow early career researchers. Previous participants have found these sessions highly beneficial for career development and professional relationship building.
The format is designed for meaningful interaction: prominent researchers host individual round tables seating 8-10 participants each, creating small-group discussions in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. ECRs can freely ask questions and seek advice without formal structure or agenda. With limited attendance to maintain quality interactions, this gathering provides ECRs with genuine, accessible mentorship in a comfortable environment.
Getting your research publicized in the media can be difficult, even for experienced researchers. Environmental journalist Adam Welz will explain effective framing techniques to attract journalists to your work, how to create press packs, how to work with journalists so you both benefit, and red flags for researchers when it comes to the media. Attendees are welcome to bring their own projects to discuss during the session.
